About this tool
BMI Calculator
Calculate body mass index from height and weight, with an adult BMI category and healthy-weight reference range.
Learn what BMI measures, how the formula works, how the adult BMI categories are interpreted, and why BMI should be treated as one screening measure rather than a diagnosis.
What BMI measures
Body Mass Index compares weight with height using weight divided by height squared. It is widely used as a screening measure for body-size categories, but it does not directly measure body fat or distinguish muscle from fat.
How BMI is calculated
In metric units, BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters squared. The calculator also shows the healthy adult weight range corresponding to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 as a mathematical reference.
How to use the calculator
Enter age, sex, height and weight. Adults can review the category and healthy-weight range. For children and teenagers, adult cut-offs should not be used; age- and sex-specific growth charts are more appropriate.
Why BMI has limitations
BMI can misclassify muscular people and does not show where body fat is distributed. Age, sex, muscle mass and other factors affect how meaningful a BMI value is.
Interpreting the result
Use the number as a screening indicator, not a diagnosis. A result outside a typical adult range can be a reason to discuss overall health, nutrition, activity and other measurements with a qualified professional.
Tervilo calculation note
Tervilo uses the standard metric BMI relationship and clearly separates adult interpretation from situations where age-specific assessment is needed.
Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the BMI formula?
BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared.
What does the BMI Calculator calculate?
It provides an estimate from the inputs you enter. Review the detailed guide on this page for formulas, interpretation, assumptions and limitations.
What BMI is considered overweight for adults?
A BMI of 25 or higher is commonly used as the adult overweight threshold, while obesity begins at 30 or higher.
Can BMI be used for children?
BMI is calculated for children but must be interpreted using age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age percentiles rather than adult cut-offs.
Is BMI a diagnosis?
No. BMI is a screening measure and should be interpreted with other health and body-composition information.
