About this tool
GPA Calculator
Calculate a credit-weighted GPA on common numeric scales and optionally include prior cumulative credits.
Learn how to calculate a weighted grade point average from course credits and grade points and how prior credits can be included.
How GPA is calculated
GPA is a credit-weighted average: multiply each course grade point by its credits, add those products, then divide by total credits.
Choosing a scale
The calculator supports common 4.0, 5.0 and 10.0 numeric scales. Institutions can use different grade policies, so the selected scale must match the school or university.
Credits matter
A three-credit course contributes more to a credit-weighted GPA than a one-credit course with the same grade point.
Prior cumulative GPA
If you already have a cumulative GPA and completed-credit total, the calculator can combine those with new coursework for a broader estimate.
Letter grades and grade points
If your institution uses letter grades, first map them to the institution’s official point values rather than assuming every school uses the same mapping.
Examples
A 4-credit course with a 3.0 grade point contributes 12 grade points. Four such courses would produce a 3.0 GPA if all credits and grades are equal.
