Image Tools

Compress Image to Target Size

Compress an image to a selected target such as 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or a custom size.

IMAGE TOOL WORKSPACE

Compress Image to Target Size

Reduce an image to a target file size such as 100 KB, 200 KB or 500 KB while keeping the best practical quality.

✓ Runs in your browser

Smaller targets can require lower quality or reduced dimensions. The tool prioritizes staying at or below the target when practical.

About this tool

Compress Image to Target Size

Reduce an image toward a defined file-size limit while preserving as much practical quality as possible. The browser-side workflow can reduce quality and, when necessary, dimensions to reach the selected target.

About Target-Size Image Compression

Target-size compression is useful when an upload form, application or publishing workflow requires an image below a defined limit. Tervilo supports common targets such as 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB and 1 MB, plus a custom target. Instead of choosing an arbitrary quality value, the tool searches through practical encoding settings to get the output close to the selected target while retaining as much quality as possible.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a supported image.
  2. Select 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or enter a custom target.
  3. Choose an output format when needed.
  4. Run the compression and inspect the resulting file size and visual quality.
  5. Keep the original source file for future edits.

Important notes

A very small target may require visible quality reduction. If the source is unnecessarily large in pixel dimensions, resize it first.

Privacy and browser processing

For these image operations, Tervilo is designed to process the selected image data in your browser. The page does not need to upload the image to a Tervilo application server for the normal conversion workflow. You should still keep your original file until you have checked the downloaded result.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I compress an image to exactly 100 KB?

The tool searches for a practical encoding setting that reaches the selected target or gets as close as the browser encoding process allows. Very small targets may require substantial quality reduction.

Can I compress an image to 50 KB or 100 KB?

Yes. Choose a preset target such as 50 KB or 100 KB, or enter a custom target between 5 KB and 5000 KB. Very small targets may require lower quality or smaller dimensions.

Should I resize before target-size compression?

If the image dimensions are much larger than necessary, resizing first can reduce the amount of compression required to reach the target size.

Will the output always be exactly the target size?

No. The tool aims to stay at or below the selected target when practical. Image content, dimensions and browser encoding can make an exact byte size impossible without excessive quality loss.

Why can dimensions change when I choose a very small target?

If quality alone cannot bring the image under the requested limit, the tool may reduce pixel dimensions as a second step. This helps meet the file-size constraint without forcing extremely low encoding quality.
