About this tool
Word Counter
A practical Word Counter for essays, articles, reports, applications and web copy. Review words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines and estimated reading time without sending ordinary text to a Tervilo application server.
About the Word Counter
A word counter is a practical writing utility for checking how much text you have written. Tervilo counts words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines directly in your browser and also provides an approximate reading-time estimate. It is useful for essays, assignments, articles, reports, applications, newsletters, manuscripts and web content.
How to use this tool
Paste or type your text into the editor and select Analyze Text. The result shows the total word count, total characters, characters without spaces, estimated reading time and additional writing statistics. The live counters update as you type so you can see the current size of your text before running the full analysis.
- Open the Word Counter page on Tervilo.
- Enter or paste the text you want to work with.
- Choose any options relevant to the task.
- Run the tool and review the result before copying or publishing it.
How the calculation or transformation works
Tervilo treats a word as a whitespace-separated token after normalizing the input. Total characters are counted from the text itself, while the no-space count removes whitespace characters. Sentence detection uses common sentence-ending punctuation and is therefore an estimate for abbreviations, decimal numbers, headings and unusual punctuation. Estimated reading time uses 200 words per minute.
