Learn how to convert common measurement units by choosing a measurement family, source unit and destination unit.
Choose a measurement family
Select length, mass, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, energy or data storage so the calculator only offers compatible units.
Convert within a family
The calculator uses standard unit relationships for each family. Temperature requires a formula rather than a simple multiplication factor.
Check the system
Some units have regional variants. For example, a US gallon is not the same as an imperial gallon. Always read the unit label before using the result.
Why precision matters
The displayed result is rounded for readability. Keep additional precision when the conversion feeds into engineering, science, finance or other calculations.
Examples
A value in meters can be converted to feet using the international foot definition. A value in Celsius is converted to Fahrenheit using the temperature relationship rather than a scale ratio.

Worked example: length conversion
If 1 inch equals 2.54 centimetres, 12 inches equals 30.48 centimetres. The underlying quantity has not changed; only its numerical representation has.
Why squared and cubed units need care
If a linear factor is squared or cubed, the conversion factor must be squared or cubed too. This matters for area and volume and is a common source of large errors.
Precision depends on the task
A rounded conversion may be fine for everyday use but unsuitable for engineering, laboratory or financial calculations. Preserve enough precision for the next step.
Linear, Area and Volume Conversions Are Different
A linear conversion changes one-dimensional length. Area conversions use the square of the linear relationship, and volume conversions use the cube. Applying a length factor directly to square or cubic units is a common source of major errors.
Temperature Needs a Formula
Temperature scales have different zero points, so Celsius and Fahrenheit cannot be converted with a simple multiplication factor. Use the appropriate temperature equation.
Regional Unit Definitions
Some units have regional variants. A US liquid gallon and an imperial gallon are different units, for example. Confirm the exact unit label before comparing results.
Worked Example: Area
If 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters, then 1 square inch equals 2.54² square centimeters, or 6.4516 square centimeters. The conversion factor must therefore be squared for area.
Worked Example: Volume
For cubic units, the linear factor is cubed. This is why a small-looking unit difference can become much larger when the quantity is expressed as volume.
Precision and Rounding
Keep additional precision during intermediate calculations when the result will be used in another calculation. Round the final displayed value according to the needs of the application.

How to Use a Conversion Calculator
A conversion calculator helps you change a measurement from one unit to another without manually applying the conversion factor. It is useful when working with length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, pressure, data size, and other common measurements.
Choose the Unit You Have and the Unit You Need
Start by selecting the unit of the value you already know, then choose the unit you want as the result. For example, if you have a measurement in kilograms and need the equivalent in pounds, select kilograms as the starting unit and pounds as the target unit.
Enter the Value Carefully
Enter the numerical value you want to convert. Check the decimal point and the selected units before calculating. A correct conversion depends on both the number and the units being used.
Understand the Result
The calculator applies the appropriate conversion relationship and displays the result in the selected target unit. Remember that converting a value changes its unit, not the underlying quantity being measured.
Metric and Imperial Units
Some conversions involve metric units such as metres, centimetres and kilograms, while others involve imperial or US customary units such as inches, feet, pounds and gallons. The same numerical value can represent very different quantities when the unit changes, so always check the unit labels in the result.
When Manual Conversion Is Useful
For frequently used conversions, knowing the basic conversion factor can help you estimate a result mentally. A calculator is preferable when accuracy matters or when the conversion involves several steps, unusual units, or decimal values.
Example
If a package weighs 10 kilograms and you want to express the weight in pounds, enter 10 as the value, select kilograms as the source unit and pounds as the target unit. The calculator then returns the equivalent weight in pounds.
Use the conversion calculator to check your result whenever you need a quick and consistent unit conversion.
