How to Convert PNG to JPG

Learn how to convert PNG to JPG, handle transparency, choose quality settings and decide when JPEG is the better destination.

In this guide Step-by-step explanations, practical examples and useful context to help you complete the task confidently.

PNG-to-JPG conversion is useful when an upload system, application or workflow prefers JPEG, especially for photographs. The trade-off is that JPEG uses lossy compression and does not support transparency. Before converting, decide whether smaller files and wide compatibility are more important than preserving transparency and lossless pixels.

Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG is excellent for lossless graphics and transparent artwork, but a photograph saved as PNG can be unnecessarily large. JPG is often more efficient for photographs and is widely supported.

Convert PNG to JPG with Tervilo

  1. Open the Tervilo PNG to JPG Converter.
  2. Select the PNG image.
  3. Choose an appropriate JPG quality level if available.
  4. Start the conversion.
  5. Inspect transparent areas and fine details.
  6. Check the final file size and use it only when JPG suits the destination.

Transparency is the major difference

JPG has no transparency channel. If the PNG has transparent pixels, the conversion must place those pixels against a background color. Tervilo's current browser-side converter uses white for those transparent areas. Do not convert a logo with meaningful transparency until you are comfortable with the resulting background.

Quality settings matter

A higher JPEG quality setting generally preserves more visual detail and usually produces a larger file. A lower setting can save space but may introduce blockiness, ringing or loss of fine texture. Compare the result at the size where it will actually be used.

A logo with a transparent background may look correct on a web page before conversion. After PNG-to-JPG conversion, the transparent region becomes a solid background. If the logo must appear over different colors, keep a transparency-capable source format instead.

Example: a photograph

A photographic PNG that is 8 MB might be converted to a visually similar JPG that is much smaller. For a normal website photo, that reduction may be worthwhile, provided the destination does not require PNG and the quality remains acceptable.

JPG is not a universal replacement

Use JPG when the image is photographic or when the destination specifically requires it. Keep PNG for screenshots, simple graphics, text-heavy images and transparency-sensitive artwork when those properties matter.

Check dimensions and color

Conversion should not be treated as a resizing operation. Verify that the output has the same dimensions unless you intentionally changed them. Also inspect gradients and sharp text because JPEG compression can affect these areas.

Keep the source image

Retain the original PNG when it is an important source asset. If you later need a transparent or lossless version, you can regenerate the JPG rather than trying to recover quality from a compressed copy.

Common mistakes

  • Converting transparent artwork without checking the background.
  • Choosing the lowest quality setting solely for the smallest file.
  • Expecting PNG-to-JPG to resize the image.
  • Deleting the original PNG after conversion.

Quick checklist

  • □ The destination accepts JPG.
  • □ Transparency is not required.
  • □ I chose a suitable quality setting.
  • □ I checked dimensions and fine details.
  • □ I kept the original PNG.

Quick answer

Convert PNG to JPG when you need a widely supported, often smaller photographic format and do not need transparency. Choose a sensible quality level, inspect transparent areas and keep the original PNG as your source.
