Extracting pages creates a new PDF containing only selected pages from a larger document. It is different from simply deleting pages: the original file remains available while the extracted file becomes a separate working document.
When to extract pages
Extraction is useful for sending a single chapter, separating an appendix, creating a short reference pack or removing unrelated pages from a document package without changing the original.
Identify the correct pages
Use the PDF viewer's page positions and check whether the document has a cover, inserts or unnumbered pages. If the PDF displays printed page numbers, compare them with the viewer's page count before selecting pages.
How to extract pages
- Open the source PDF.
- Select the required page numbers or thumbnails.
- Create a new PDF from the selection.
- Open the new file.
- Confirm that the expected pages and their order are present.
Does extraction reduce file size?
Usually it can, because fewer pages are stored, but the result depends on embedded resources and how the PDF is constructed. Extraction should not be confused with compression.
Protect the original
Keep the source PDF until the extracted document has been checked. This is especially important for legal, financial, academic or administrative records.
Use a PDF page extractor
Use the Tervilo PDF page extractor when you need a browser-based way to create a PDF from selected pages.
Extraction does not rewrite the source
In a normal page-extraction workflow, the source PDF remains unchanged and a new file is created. This is useful for preserving an original record, but it also means you should manage both files carefully so an outdated extracted copy is not mistaken for the current source.
Check annotations and links
If the selected pages contain comments, annotations, internal links or form elements, verify how the extraction process handles them. Features that refer to pages outside the extracted range may no longer behave as expected.
Practical example
Imagine a 40-page report where only pages 8, 12 and 27 are required for a submission. Select those pages deliberately and create a new PDF. Then check that the extracted document contains exactly three pages and that their order is appropriate. Keep the 40-page source until the submission has been accepted or the extracted copy is no longer needed.
Extraction vs Deleting Pages
Extracting pages creates a separate PDF containing selected content. It does not require changing the original document. This is useful when a chapter, form, invoice or supporting section must be shared separately while the source file remains intact.
Extracting Multiple Ranges
When several non-contiguous sections are required, check whether the tool accepts multiple page numbers or ranges. Record the intended sequence before processing so the extracted document is easy to verify.
Verify the Extracted PDF
- Confirm the number of extracted pages.
- Check the first and last pages.
- Confirm that every requested section is present.
- Check page order and orientation.
- Keep the original file until verification is complete.
Privacy Before Sharing
An extracted section can still contain confidential information from forms, invoices, signatures or attachments. Review the complete extracted PDF before uploading or sending it.
