How Salary Conversion Works
Salary conversion starts with a gross pay amount and its pay period. Tervilo annualizes the amount using 52 weeks, 26 bi-weekly periods and 24 semi-monthly periods, then derives equivalent monthly, weekly, daily and hourly values from the work schedule you enter.
Gross Pay vs Take-Home Pay
Gross pay is before taxes and other deductions. Take-home pay depends on local tax rules, social contributions, retirement plans, insurance and employer-specific deductions, so this global calculator does not attempt to estimate net pay.
Bi-weekly vs Semi-monthly
Bi-weekly means every two weeks and normally produces 26 pay periods per year. Semi-monthly means twice per month and normally produces 24 pay periods per year.
Unpaid Time Off
The optional adjustment subtracts the unpaid holidays and vacation days entered by the user. Paid leave should not be entered as unpaid time because it does not reduce gross annual salary.
Annual, Monthly, Weekly and Bi-weekly Pay
Weekly = Annual / 52
Bi-Weekly = Annual / 26
These are standard planning conventions. Employers can use different pay schedules, so use the actual number of pay periods when the payroll arrangement specifies one.
Annual Salary to Hourly Pay
At $30 per hour for 40 hours per week and 52 weeks, the annual gross equivalent is $62,400. The monthly equivalent is $5,200 and the bi-weekly equivalent is $2,400 before deductions.
Why Work Hours Matter
Annual working hours depend on weekly hours, paid leave, holidays, unpaid time and the convention used. Two people with the same annual salary can have different effective hourly values if their working schedules differ.
Reverse Conversion
To estimate annual gross pay from an hourly rate, multiply the hourly rate by the assumed annual paid hours. The same assumptions must be used in both directions.
How to Compare Job Offers
- Compare annual gross compensation first.
- Check the number of paid working hours and pay periods.
- Review bonuses, commissions and benefits separately.
- Check whether retirement or insurance contributions are employer-funded or deducted from pay.
- Compare estimated net pay only after applying the appropriate local payroll assumptions.
Hourly Salary Example
At $30 per hour for 40 hours per week and 52 weeks, the annual gross equivalent is $62,400. If the schedule includes unpaid time or a different number of annual working hours, the effective hourly comparison can change.

Common Mistakes
- Dividing annual salary by 12 and treating the result as net pay.
- Using 2,080 hours without checking the actual work schedule.
- Mixing weekly, bi-weekly and semi-monthly pay periods.
- Ignoring bonuses or benefits when comparing total compensation.
- Assuming a salary conversion represents an actual payroll statement.
Limitations
A salary conversion is not a payroll statement. The calculator does not automatically know local tax rates, employment contracts, overtime rules or benefits. Verify payroll rules, overtime, taxes and contractual terms locally.
Why There Is No Single Correct Hourly Salary
An annual salary can be converted to an hourly equivalent only after deciding how many working hours are represented by that salary. A common planning convention is 40 hours per week multiplied by 52 weeks, producing 2,080 hours, but actual employment schedules can differ.
Reverse Conversion from Hourly Pay
To estimate annual gross compensation from an hourly rate, multiply the hourly rate by the assumed annual paid hours. The same working-hour assumptions should be used when comparing hourly and annual compensation.
Salary Offer Comparison Example
When comparing two job offers, do not compare only the headline salary. Review annual gross pay, expected working hours, pay frequency, bonuses, commissions, paid leave and employer-funded benefits. A higher annual salary does not automatically represent better overall compensation.
Bi-Weekly and Semi-Monthly Are Different
Bi-weekly pay normally produces 26 pay periods per year, while semi-monthly pay normally produces 24 pay periods. This distinction matters when comparing quoted pay amounts.
Salary Conversion Checklist
- Identify whether the amount is gross or net.
- Identify the pay period.
- Confirm the number of annual working hours for hourly comparisons.
- Account for unpaid time when relevant.
- Review bonuses and benefits separately.
- Do not treat the calculated amount as an official payroll statement.
